Casa de Consejeria y Salud Integral, Inc. (CASA), a community-based, 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization placed in the heart of Eastern North Philadelphia’s Latino community, was established in 1993 as a grassroots movement to provide counseling services to Spanish speaking residents through a network of volunteer professionals from social work, psychology, behavioral health, and simple disciplines. Led by originator Birma Montes – who remains as the Executive Director today they created a niche with clients impacted by substance abuse problems, counseling them in their selected language and within a relevant cultural context.
They were granted a full permit by the Pennsylvania Department of Health / Bureau of Drug and Alcohol Programs and became an offerer for Pennsylvania’s Medicaid program. They formed the SEAC coalition with Esperanza Health Center, Ayuda Community Center, and Spirit &Truth Community Church. The combination was awarded a 3 and half-year grant in the price of $330,000 from the Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disability (DBHIDS) to give community events and art treatment workshops that brought families together and provided them with tools for sustainability.
